Creating A Lifestyle of Wellness

What is wellness?  Wellness is:

A way of life

A choice

A process

Integration of mind, body, spirit

Loving acceptance of one’s self

A state of being

Wellness is a state of being which is different for each individual and continues to change.  It’s a healthy balance of physical, emotional, spiritual, vocational, intellectual, social, and environmental health.  Wellness and good health have more to do with attitude, adaptations, acceptance, and over all lifestyle.

To achieve the highest state of wellness, one must learn the components of wellness. Facilitating growth of personal capabilities and strengths in each component to create balance most advantageous at this time in one’s life.

An overall effective wellness program should include:

          • exercise
          • nutrition
          • stress management
          • health maintenance
          • disease prevention

Understand that changing one’s lifestyle is difficult.  Busy lives, commitment level, and outside obstacles all play a part in one’s wellness plan.  It will not happen over night and requires taking small steps.  Studies have shown that it takes 12-24 weeks to successfully change a habit.  A wellness plan will assist in exchanging bad habits for good habits for the sake of optimum wellness.

An effective wellness coach will build self-awareness, set objectives and strategies, build confidence, self-responsibility and self efficacy.  The coach should build skills and provide tools for success as well as educate, guide, motivate, and support.  A good wellness coach will assist in overcoming obstacles and foster accountability.

Creating a lifestyle of wellness should include a wellness plan consisting of exercise, nutrition, stress management, health management, and disease prevention along with a coach which effectively builds self-awareness, sets objectives and strategies, builds confidence, self-responsibility, self efficacy and fosters accountability.
